Put some PEP in your step!

On December 2nd, PEF and New York State reached agreement on a memorandum of understanding that restores the Productivity Enhancement Program (PEP) for 2016.  We are working with the State to expedite implementation of the program, but the MOU provides that the benefit will be retroactive so participants will  receive the full annual benefit.  As soon as more detail is available, it will be posted on pef.org.

UPDATE: Attendance and Leave Manual Policy Bulletin 15-02 issued 12/8/2015

The Productivity Enhancement Program (PEP) allows eligible PEF-represented employees in the Executive branch to exchange previously accrued annual leave (vacation) and/or personal leave in return for a credit to be applied toward their employee share NYSHIP premiums on a biweekly basis. Follow the link below to find the Program Description, the Institution Teachers Appendix, and the enrollment form for the 2016 PEP Program.

What is a steward?
A local shop steward is important to your fellow union members – he or she acts as an information conduit between management, the union leadership, and the members.

Who can be a shop steward?
Any dues-paying union member.

What does a steward do?

  • Communicates union news to the members and communicates concerns or problems from the members to union leadership.
  • Acts as a liaison to ensure that members get proper assistance with problems or grievances.
  • Recruits new members and helps with orientation for new employees.

Stewards do NOT need to handle grievances themselves if they do not feel comfortable. We act as a team to help members!

How much time is involved? Varies, but the initial commitment is 1 day for steward training and approximately 1 hour a month for steward meetings.
Additional time may be spent helping members or catching up on union news.
Time spent in shop steward duties is NOT charged to your accruals. Instead, it is “EOL” or Employee Organization Leave.

If you want more information on becoming a steward and helping your fellow union members stay informed, please feel free to contact me (Sarah Lauser)
