Members in Albany, Binghamton, and Long Island should have received steward nomination and election notices in the mail this past week.
We are holding a vacancy election for steward positions in these areas. There is 1 position available for Binghamton and 1 available for Long Island.
There are 8 positions available in the Albany area (including Riverview, State Campus, RTP, and Glens Falls).
If you would like to be a steward, fill out a petition and have at least 5 other members sign endorsing you.
Sign the bottom of the petition accepting the nomination for position of steward and send it back to PEF by July 17th.
The term of office for these stewards would be from approximately the end of July through March 31, 2016.
What is a steward?
A local shop steward is important to your fellow union members – he or she acts as an information conduit between management, the union leadership, and the members.
Who can be a shop steward?
Any dues-paying union member.
What does a steward do?
- Communicates union news to the members and communicates concerns or problems from the members to union leadership.
- Acts as a liaison to ensure that members get proper assistance with problems or grievances.
- Recruits new members and helps with orientation for new employees.
Stewards do NOT need to handle grievances themselves if they do not feel comfortable. We act as a team to help members!
How much time is involved? Varies, but the initial commitment is 1 day for steward training and approximately 1 hour a month for steward meetings.
Additional time may be spent helping members or catching up on union news.
Time spent in shop steward duties is NOT charged to your accruals. Instead, it is “EOL” or Employee Organization Leave.
